The basics
Balloon Columns, Towers and Pillars: What They Are
Balloon columns, balloon towers, balloon pillars and balloon posts are the same idea: a vertical stack of balloons on a pole and weighted base.
A balloon column stands on its own, usually 5 to 8 feet tall, so you can put it almost anywhere: both sides of a front door, either end of a stage, down a wedding aisle, at the corners of a dance floor or next to a trade show booth. Columns are the most flexible piece of balloon decor and the easiest way to add height to a room without hanging anything.
They're also the most affordable way to make an entrance. Two columns cost less than a full balloon arch, and you can add the arch later by joining the tops, which is the classic "balloon arches and columns" combination for school dances and grand openings.
Column styles
Balloon Column Styles
Every column uses the same pole and base. The pattern on it is what changes.
Classic stacked columns
Clusters of four balloons stacked tightly up the pole in one color or in bands of color. Clean, bold and the most affordable column.
Spiral balloon columns (2, 3 and 4 colors)
Offset the colors in each cluster and they twist up the column like a barber pole. Two-color spirals are simple and sharp; three-color spirals (like red, white and blue for the 4th of July) are the most requested; four-color spirals suit rainbow and team themes.
Organic balloon columns
Mixed balloon sizes in loose clusters for a softer, fuller look that matches an organic arch or garland. They use more balloons, so they cost more than classic columns, and they're the modern choice for weddings and showers.
Themed and novelty columns
Columns can become characters and objects: a pencil column for back-to-school, a palm tree column for a luau, a traffic light for a cars party, a Grinch column at Christmas, a candy column for Candy Land. Themed columns are the fun way to decorate a school hallway or a kids' party.

Toppers
Balloon Columns With Numbers and Toppers
A topper is what makes a column about your event.
- Number toppers: a 34- or 40-inch foil number on top for a birthday age, an anniversary or a class year. It's our most-requested column style.
- Stars, hearts and crowns: foil shapes for graduations, Valentine's Day and quinceañeras.
- Bubble balloon toppers: a clear bubble balloon with confetti, feathers or a name.
- Grad caps and diplomas: for graduation columns and senior nights.
- Logo or letter panels: for corporate events and store openings.
Sizing
How Tall Are Balloon Columns, and How Many Balloons Do They Need?
A standard balloon column is about 6 feet tall plus its topper.
| Column | Height | Balloons (approx.) |
|---|---|---|
| Mini or tabletop column | 2–3 ft | 12–20 |
| Standard classic or spiral column | 5–6 ft | 40–60 (11-inch) |
| Tall classic column | 7–8 ft | 60–80 (11-inch) |
| Organic column | 5–7 ft | 60–100+ (mixed sizes) |
Counts are for the column body. Toppers, bases and decorative clusters at the foot add a few more.
What size balloon for a column? Most columns use 11-inch latex balloons in clusters of four, which builds a column about 18–20 inches across. Organic columns add 5-inch and 16- to 18-inch balloons for texture.
Pricing
How Much Do Balloon Columns Cost in Houston?
Most single columns run $75–$250, depending on style and topper.
| Column | Starting at |
|---|---|
| Mini tabletop column | $50 |
| Classic column | $75 |
| Spiral column (2–4 colors) | $95 |
| Themed column (graduation, holiday) | $130 |
| Organic column | $150 |
| Balloon tower with number or star topper | $165 |
Prices are per column, delivered and set in place in our core Houston service area.
How much for two balloon columns? Most entrances use a pair, so plan on $150–$500 for two, depending on style. Pairs are priced better than two singles, and adding an arch between them costs less than building both separately.
Placement
Where Balloon Columns Go
Columns are at their best in pairs, framing something.
Entrances
Both sides of a front door, a venue door or a storefront, so guests know exactly where to go.
Stages and DJ booths
Columns at each end of a stage or DJ table frame performers and speakers in every photo.
Wedding aisles
Short columns down the aisle, or two tall columns where the couple stands.
Dance floors
Columns at the corners of a dance floor, sometimes joined overhead with a garland canopy.
Trade show booths
Brand-color columns make a booth visible from down the aisle at a convention.
Gyms and school halls
Rows of columns in school colors for graduations, prom, homecoming and senior night.
Occasions
Balloon Columns for Graduations, Weddings, Birthdays and Holidays
Graduation season is the busiest time for columns in Houston, but they work for almost every event.
- Graduation: balloon columns and towers in school colors with grad caps, stars or the class year, for grad parties, prom and senior night.
- Weddings and bridal showers: white and gold or blush organic columns at the ceremony and reception.
- Birthdays: a balloon column for a birthday with the age on top, from first birthdays to 60th birthdays.
- Gender reveals: pink and blue columns with a question-mark topper.
- Corporate events and trade shows: brand-color columns for booths, lobbies and openings.
- Holidays: Christmas, Halloween, Valentine's, Easter, Thanksgiving and patriotic 4th of July columns.
- Quinceañeras and sweet 16s: columns flanking the court's entrance.
Outdoor columns
Outdoor Balloon Columns in Houston Weather
Columns are top-heavy and catch wind, so outdoor columns are built differently.
- Outdoor columns get heavier bases and are tied off when there's a fence, post or rail nearby.
- Air-filled columns last far longer outdoors than helium ones.
- Shade matters: direct summer sun fades and pops latex in a few hours, and dark colors heat up fastest.
- For storefronts on busy streets, columns go where the wind is blocked by the building.
Longevity
How Long Does a Balloon Column Last?
Several days indoors. Hours in direct summer sun.
An air-filled balloon column in an air-conditioned room lasts several days and often a week. Outdoors in shade it lasts about a day. In direct Houston summer sun, columns start to oxidize and pop within a few hours. Columns can be built one to two days ahead for indoor events, which is handy for morning graduations and school events.

Our classic and spiral balloon columns start at $75 each, organic columns at $150 and towers with toppers at $165. Most entrances use a pair.
How many balloons are in a balloon column?
About 40–60 11-inch balloons for a classic 5–6 ft column, 60–80 for a 7–8 ft column, and 60–100 or more in mixed sizes for an organic column.
What size balloons are used for a balloon column?
Most balloon columns use 11-inch latex balloons in clusters of four. Organic columns mix 5-, 11- and 16–18-inch balloons.
How long does a balloon column last?
Several days indoors when air-filled, about a day outdoors in shade, and a few hours in direct Houston summer sun.
How far in advance can a balloon column be made?
One to two days ahead for indoor events. Outdoor summer columns should be set up the same day.
What's the difference between a balloon column, a balloon tower and a balloon pillar?
Nothing important. They're three names for the same thing: a freestanding stack of balloons on a pole and weighted base. "Tower" is often used for columns with a big topper.
Can balloon columns have a number on top?
Yes. A 34- or 40-inch foil number is the most popular topper, used for birthdays, anniversaries and graduation class years.
Do balloon columns need helium?
No. Columns are air-filled and held up by a pole and weighted base. Only a floating topper or bubble balloon might use helium.
What is an organic balloon column?
An organic balloon column uses mixed balloon sizes in loose clusters instead of uniform stacked rings, so it looks fuller and softer, like an organic arch.
